How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on multiplying whole numbers, to do together the day before the test. Its 13 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so no problem on the review is on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Ask students to estimate before they multiply, and to check their answer against the estimate. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to explain each step of the standard algorithm out loud, and to estimate first so they know about how big the answer should be.

Tips for Success

  • Count the zeros in both factors, then write them after the fact
  • Split each factor by place value in an area model, then add the parts
  • Write each regrouped digit small, above the next place
  • Estimate first, then check the answer against the estimate
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.B.5 Multiply whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method.

5th Grade Multiplying Whole Numbers Unit Review

5th Grade

A review of the unit on multiplying whole numbers, to go over together the day before the test. Students multiply multiples of 10, write powers of ten, estimate to check, fill in area models, break factors apart, use the standard algorithm and solve stories.
