How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on place value, powers of ten and decimals, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade place value the unit builds on: 10 times and 1/10 of whole numbers, multiplying and dividing whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000, fractions in tenths and hundredths as decimals, the value of a digit, comparing decimals to hundredths, and rounding whole numbers. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet say what 10 times or 1/10 of a whole number is needs a place value chart for the first lessons, and one who misses the decimals needs tenths and hundredths again before the thousandths. Nothing on the page asks for thousandths or exponents yet, so it shows where to start, not what the unit will teach.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: ask what 10 times 35 is, and which is more, 0.5 or 0.48.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep a place value chart out for a student who missed the first questions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round whole numbers up to a million to any place, such as the nearest thousand or ten thousand, by thinking about place value.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.

5th Grade Place Value and Decimals Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on place value, powers of ten and decimals, on the place value it builds on. Students use 10 times and 1/10 of with whole numbers, multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000, write fractions as decimals, name the value of a digit, compare decimals and round whole numbers.
