How to Use This Pack

The unit test on place value, powers of ten and decimals. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 11 are the Common Core part of the unit; question 12 (one number many ways, and 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 more or less) is for the states that teach it in 5th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Most questions have two or more parts: give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. Question 12, at the bottom of the second page, is taught in 5th grade in some states only: give it if your class learns it and score out of what you give. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or from the practice sheets.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to read a decimal aloud by its last place (2.017 is two and seventeen thousandths) and to say which is more, 3.5 or 3.418, and why.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a place value chart from the millions to the thousandths on the board
  • Read 10⁹ aloud as ten to the ninth power, and count its zeros
  • Have students say which way the digits move before they multiply or divide by 10, 100 or 1,000
  • Write zeros to give decimals the same number of places before comparing them
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
