How to Use This Pack

Seven exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on place value, powers of ten and decimals, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 1.5 is for the states that teach one number many ways and 0.001, 0.01 and 0.1 more or less in 5th grade; skip it if your class does not. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Ask your child to read each decimal aloud by its last place: 2.017 is two and seventeen thousandths.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a place value chart from the millions to the thousandths on the board
  • Read 10³ aloud as ten to the third power, and say how many zeros it has
  • Have students say which way the digits move before they multiply or divide by 10, 100 or 1,000
  • Write zeros to give decimals the same number of places before comparing them
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
