How to Use This Pack

Seven lesson plans, one for each lesson of the first unit of 5th grade, place value, powers of ten and decimals, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the seven lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quizzes for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Keep a place value chart from the millions to the thousandths on the board all unit. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans teach with other numbers than they use. Lesson 1.5 (one number many ways, and 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 more or less) is taught in 5th grade in some states, Florida and Oklahoma; skip it if yours does not.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. A meter stick, a ruler with millimeters, prices and race times make good decimals to read, compare and round. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Read decimals by their last place: 6.025 is six and twenty-five thousandths
  • Ask "which way do the digits move, and how many places?" before every times or divided by
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
