How to Use This Pack

Five pages on decimal place value through the thousandths. Page 1 fills a place value chart from the hundreds to the thousandths, finds the value of an underlined digit (the 2 in 4.527 is 0.02), and uses the pattern that each place is 10 times the place to its right and 1/10 of the place to its left. Page 2 moves between standard form and word form, then writes numbers in expanded form two ways: 4.207 = 4 + 0.2 + 0.007 and 4 × 1 + 2 × 1/10 + 7 × 1/1000. Page 3 zooms in on number lines from tenths to hundredths to thousandths, names a number in several ways, and finds 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 more or less. Page 4 marks decimals and fractions on number lines and orders them, compares pairs such as 0.407 and 0.47 or 3/10 and 0.03, and orders sets of four. Page 5 rounds on number lines, fills a rounding table, and circles every number that rounds to 4.3.

In the Classroom

Write a number such as 352.718 in a large place value chart on the board and read it together, saying the place of each digit. On page 3, show that each line is one tenth of the line above it: the part between 0.32 and 0.33 is cut into ten thousandths. Before page 5, ask which tick a number is closer to, and what happens exactly halfway.

At Home

Look at prices, sports times, and measurements with three decimal places, such as a race won by 0.004 seconds. Ask your child to read the number aloud, name the place of each digit, and say which of two times is faster.

Tips for Success

  • After the decimal point come tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths
  • Each place is 10 times the place to its right and 1/10 of the place to its left
  • Zeros at the end do not change a decimal: 2.5 = 2.500
  • To compare, line up the decimal points and compare place by place from the left
  • To round, find the two numbers it is between and see which is closer; exactly halfway rounds up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
