How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on place value, powers of ten and decimals, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions take the lessons in the test's order, with other numbers; where the test orders decimals from least to greatest, the review orders them from greatest to least, and where the test rounds to the nearest hundredth, the review rounds to the nearest tenth. Questions 1 to 11 are the Common Core lessons, and question 12 (one number many ways, and 0.001 more and 0.01 less) is for the states that teach it. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 12 is taught in 5th grade in some states only: leave it out if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to multiply a decimal by 100 and say which way the digits moved, and to round 8.247 to the nearest tenth.

Tips for Success

  • Say each power of ten as a number of zeros before writing it out
  • Move the digits, not the point: times 10 moves every digit one place to the left
  • Write zeros to give decimals the same number of places before comparing them
  • Look one place to the right of the place you round to
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.1 Know that each place is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left, decimals included.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.A.3a Read and write decimals to thousandths in digits, words and expanded form, such as 4.207 = 4 + 2/10 + 7/1000.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place, such as the nearest whole number, tenth or hundredth, by thinking about place value.
