How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on solid figures and volume, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 11.1 and 11.2 (solid figures and nets: Florida, Oklahoma), 11.7 (missing edges and boxes with the same volume: Florida, Oklahoma) and 11.10 (perimeter, area or volume: Texas, Virginia) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade. Where the key says "One way", other answers are right too. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Build a box shape with sugar cubes or blocks and count the cubes in one layer, then the layers.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a few unit cubes on each table for the first tickets
  • Have students say the unit with every volume: cubic units, cubic centimeters, cubic inches
  • Ask "how many in the bottom layer, how many layers?" before multiplying
  • Ask "around, cover or fill?" before a perimeter, area or volume story
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.MD.A.3 Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.NF.B.4b Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.
  • 5.MD.C.3a Know that a unit cube, with edges 1 unit long, has a volume of one cubic unit and is the unit for measuring volume.
  • 5.MD.C.3b Know that a solid exactly filled by some number of unit cubes, with no gaps or overlapping, has that many cubic units of volume.
  • 5.MD.C.4 Find a volume by counting how many unit cubes fill it, in cubic centimeters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 5.MD.C.5a Pack a rectangular prism with unit cubes and check that the cube count equals length × width × height, or base area × height.
  • 5.MD.C.5b Use the two volume formulas for rectangular prisms (length × width × height, and base area × height) in real and math problems.
  • 5.MD.C.5c Find the volume of a solid made of two rectangular prisms that do not overlap by adding their volumes, including in real problems.
