Six pages of Christmas shopping at the Holly Lane Gift Shop, a made-up store whose catalog prices stay the same all the way through. Page 1 is the catalog: students look up two or three gifts, add their prices and find the change from a $20 or $50 bill. Page 2 lists every pair of gifts from a shelf to find the ones within a $15.00 budget and the pair that leaves the least money, then picks the three gifts that use the most of $25.00. Page 3 is the holiday sale: half off, $5 off and one tenth off, how much each sale saves, and which of two sales saves more. Page 4 is a budget table through a shopping trip (spent so far and money left after each gift), then a list bought in order, skipping a gift there is not enough money for. Page 5 finds the price of one in a pack by dividing and compares it with the price of one alone, then asks what to buy when only a few are needed. Page 6 saves a little each week for a gift in a table, then solves four budget stories. Every price ends in 0 or 5 cents, and there is no sales tax. The first problem on pages 1 to 5 is a worked example.
Hand out page 1 and set up a class gift shop with the catalog prices and play money; one partner shops for two gifts, the other is the cashier who counts up the change. Before page 2, ask how to be sure no pair of gifts was missed, and list them in order on the board. Page 4 makes a good model for any class budget, such as a party or a field trip.
Make a gift list together before shopping and set a budget for it. Ask your child to add up the list, look for sales and compare a pack with buying one alone. If they are saving for something, keep a weekly table like the one on page 6 and see which week the goal is reached.
