Five pages of picture maps on a grid of squares, with arrows beside the map for left, right, up and down. Page 1 asks where one animal is from another: children circle left of or right of, above or below. Page 2 asks what is between two animals, above or below one, to its right or next to it, and children circle the animal. Page 3 gives a start and two moves, like 2 squares right, then 3 squares up; children follow them on the map and circle where they stop. Page 4 shows a path on four small maps, and children write how many squares and circle which way for each part. On page 5 children find the way around the rocks themselves, draw it and write the directions.
Make a grid on the floor with tape and stand toys in some squares. Let one child give directions, "Go 2 squares forward, then 1 square to the right," while another walks them. Then ask where things are: who is next to the bear? Who is between the lion and the frog? Read the questions aloud with the class before they circle.
Draw a grid on paper and put small toys or coins in some squares. Take turns giving directions to move a counter from one toy to another, then swap and let your child give them. Use position words around the house too: the cup is left of the plate, the book is above the shelf.

Position words and simple directions on picture maps drawn on a grid of squares. Students tell where animals are with left of, right of, above, below, between and next to, follow moves such as 2 squares right and 3 squares up, and write the directions for a path.
