About Hanukkah gelt

Gelt is the Yiddish word for money. During Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, children are often given chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil, called gelt, and use them to play the dreidel game. The coins on these pages say 1, 5 and 10 and are not any country's money, so the pages work anywhere. In 2026 Hanukkah begins on the evening of December 4 and ends on December 12.

How to Use This Pack

Five pages of counting with gelt. Page 1 has coins marked 1 in rows of 5: count them and write how many, up to 20. On page 2 every coin says 5: students count by 5s and write the count under each coin, and page 3 does the same by 10s up to 100. Page 4 shows net bags of 10 coins with some loose coins: write how many bags, how many more and how many in all. Page 5 mixes coins marked 10, 5 and 1, always biggest first: students count on and write the count under each coin. The first problem on every page is a worked example, and on pages 2 and 3 the first count of each row is given.

In the Classroom

Hand out real or paper coins marked 1, 5 and 10 and count a row together, saying each number aloud. For page 4, fill a bag or cup with 10 counters so students see that a bag is one ten. On page 5, model starting with the biggest coin: "10, 20, 25, 26, 27."

At Home

Count coins, buttons or chocolate gelt together, by ones and then in groups of 5 or 10. Ask your child to put 10 in a cup, then count the cups by 10s and the loose ones by 1s.

Tips for Success

  • Rows of 5 help you count: 5, 10, 15, 20
  • When every coin says 5, count by 5s
  • A bag of 10 is one ten: count the bags by 10s, then the loose coins by 1s
  • Start with the biggest coins, then count on
  • The last number you write is how many in all
