How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on number pairs and making 10, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. How many more dots make 5?" There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, at a table with counters and ten frames out. Read a question, let children answer on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 10 (the equal sign: circle the one that is the same as 4 + 2) is a Kindergarten lesson in Florida only: skip it if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud and let your child count on fingers or with small things like buttons or cereal.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number or drawing dots
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Ten fingers make a good ten frame: hold up 7 and count the fingers that are down
  • For a number sentence, point to each box as you read: in all, then each group
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.2 Solve story problems and add or subtract with totals up to 10, modeling them with objects or drawings.
  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.4 For a number from 1 to 9, find the partner that adds with it to 10, and show it in a picture or number sentence.
  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
