Each page has four programs drawn as flow charts. A program starts at a number, then repeats two steps: it prints the number, then changes it by the rule (add, subtract, multiply, or divide). Its output is the number pattern it printed, and some of those numbers went missing. Students follow the code to fill in each blank. There are three levels: pages 1 to 4 are on grade level with all four operations; pages 5 and 6 are support pages that add and subtract within 100; pages 7 and 8 are a challenge, with bigger steps, numbers into the hundreds, and more blanks, some side by side.
Run the first program together: read the start box, print the number, apply the rule, and go around the loop, counting each pass. Then give each group the level that fits: pages 1 to 4 for most of the class, pages 5 and 6 for support, and pages 7 and 8 as a challenge.
Have your child point to each box as they run the program out loud: "print 4, add 5, print 9." The loop runs the number of times it says, so the output has that many numbers.

Eight third grade worksheets where each number pattern comes from a simple program: start at a number, repeat, print the number, and add, subtract, multiply, or divide. Some of the output went missing, and students run the code to fill in the missing numbers. Includes support, on-level, and challenge pages, color and black-and-white versions, and answer keys.
