Five pages of money stories, all within 100¢ or $100, the 2nd grade line: an amount is in cents or in whole dollars, never both. Page 1 is four cent stories with a bar model (buying two things, what is left, how much more is needed, a missing price). Page 2 is a class store: six toys with price tags, then six questions about buying them. On page 3 each story starts with a group of coins; students count the coins first, then use the total to solve the story. Page 4 is four dollar stories (more money, change from $100, how much more, a missing part), solved on an open number line. Page 5 is two-step stories with a number sentence for each step.
Set up a class store with price tags under $1 and a tray of play coins. Before page 2, have pairs buy two things and find the total, then pay with coins. For page 4, model change from $100 by counting up on an open number line: from $82 to $90, then to $100.
At the store, pick two things that cost less than a dollar and add the prices together. Give your child a few coins and ask what they could buy, and how much would be left. Ask how much more they would need for something that costs more than they have.
