Five pages on one big idea: the same amount of money can be made with different coins. Page 1 trades coins for coins (one dime is 2 nickels, one quarter is 5 nickels, one dollar is 4 quarters, 10 dimes or 20 nickels), then circles the group worth the same as a quarter, a dollar bill or two quarters. On page 2 students count two groups of coins, write both totals and circle Same or Not the same. Page 3 shows three groups in each row; students write each total and circle the two that match. Page 4 is two tables of ways to make 30¢ and 50¢, each row missing one number of coins. Page 5 shows a group of coins and asks for the same amount with the fewest coins, then finds the coin missing from one of two equal groups.
Set out a bank of play coins and trade with the class: hand over a quarter and get back 5 nickels, or 2 dimes and a nickel. Before page 4, ask everyone to make 30¢ on their desk, then list the ways on the board: no two children need the same coins. Page 5's fewest coins is a good warm up the next day: start with the coin worth the most.
Pick an amount, like 35¢, and take turns making it with the coins in a jar in a new way each time. Ask which way uses the fewest coins. When you pay at a store, show your child two ways you could pay the same price.

A 5-page 2nd grade money pack on making the same amount with different coins. Trade coins for coins (a quarter is 5 nickels, a dollar is 4 quarters or 10 dimes) and circle the group of coins worth the same as a quarter, a dollar or 50¢. Count two groups and decide whether they show the same amount, find the two groups out of three that match, and fill in tables of ways to make 30¢ and 50¢ with quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. Last, show an amount with the fewest coins and find the coin missing from a group. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
