How to Use This Pack

Forty flash cards, one for each number from 11 to 50, eight to a sheet. The front shows the number by itself. The back shows its word and the number in base-ten blocks: ten rods and ones in columns of five, so 34 is 3 rods and 4 ones. Print the pack double-sided and flip on the long edge: each back sheet is laid out mirrored, so every card's back lands behind its front. Printed one-sided, the backs make a second set to match with the fronts. The number is printed small in the corner of each back for sorting the cards.

In the Classroom

Hold up a card for the class to read together, or deal a small pile to partners: one reads the front, the other turns it over to check the word and count the blocks. Pull out the cards a child misses into a "practice" pile and come back to those. For a game, lay the cards face down and take turns turning one over: read it right and keep it.

At Home

Go through five or six cards a day rather than the whole set. Mix in the tricky ones (13, 30, 31) and let your child check you by turning the card over.

Tips for Success

  • Read the tens digit first: 47 is forty-seven
  • Teen numbers say the ones first: fourteen is 1 ten and 4 ones
  • Count the rods by tens, then the ones
  • Keep the cards a child misses in their own pile
  • Card stock makes the cards last
