Five pages, eight words a page: the 40 Dolch pre-primer words in A to Z order, from a to you. Each word sits on its own set of handwriting lines, written once in ink as an example, then twice in dashed lines to trace, with room after them to write it twice more. The words are the ball-and-stick print children are taught, so the letters they trace are the letters they will read.
Read the row's word together before tracing it, and say each letter's name as you trace. A page a week keeps pace with a word wall of eight new words. For a child who is ready, fold the example out of sight and have them write the word from memory.
Do one row at a time. Ask your child to read the word aloud each time they write it, then find it in a picture book.
