Five pages of sentence scrambles, two sentences to build on each after a worked example. Each sentence has a picture, a row of empty boxes, one for each word, and a handwriting line under it. Children cut the mixed-up words from the numbered strips at the bottom of the page, glue them in order, and then write the whole sentence on the line. The sentences use the Dolch primer words and words children can sound out, and each goes together only one way.
After the words are glued, ask children to read the sentence before writing it, a finger under each word. Check the capital at the start and the mark at the end of what they write. This works well as a center: cutting, gluing and writing take about fifteen minutes a page.
Help your child cut neatly along the dashed lines, then let them do the rest. Ask what the sentence says about the picture.
Cut and paste sentences made of Dolch primer sight words and words children can sound out, each with its picture. Children cut out the mixed-up words, glue them in order, then write the sentence on handwriting lines.
