Five pages, a short vowel each and a different kind of practice on each. Short a words to trace, then write twice. Short e words with the vowel left out, to fill in from a word bank. Short i words with their letters mixed up, to put in order and write; no mix-up is ever another word, so each has one answer. Short o words to write in ABC order. Short u words to look at, cover by folding the page, write and check twice. The answer keys show the missing vowels, the unscrambled words and the ABC order.
Say each word together and stretch out its sounds before children write it: the vowel is the sound in the middle. Use a page a day for a week of short vowel spelling, or hand out the page for the vowel you are teaching. On the look, cover, write, check page, show children how to fold along the dashed line so the word is hidden.
Read the words aloud with your child first. For the look, cover, write, check page, let your child check each word against the folded-back column and tick it when it matches.
Spelling practice with short vowel words, a vowel a page. Children trace and write the words, fill in missing vowels, unscramble letters, put words in ABC order and look, cover, write and check.
