Nine pages on the first vowel teams, two vowels side by side that make one sound, the long vowel: ai and ay as in train and hay, ee and ea as in feet and leaf, and oa as in boat. Children circle the letters that spell each picture's vowel sound, sort pictures by sound and words by spelling, and write words from a word bank with the team in one box. Then they circle the word that names a picture (rain, not run or gain), read and match, build words from letter tiles, follow the long e words through a maze and play roll and read.
Teach the saying "when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking" for these five teams: in boat the o says its name and the a is quiet. Point out that ay comes at the end of a word (day, play) and ai inside it (rain, train); ee and ea sound the same, so children learn each word's spelling by reading it often.
Hunt for vowel team words on cereal boxes, signs and books: read each one together and say which two vowels are the team and what sound they make.
Vowel team worksheets for ai, ay, ee, ea and oa, two vowels that make one long vowel sound, as in train, hay, feet, leaf and boat. Children circle and sort by the vowel sound, write and build words a sound a box, read and match, and play a maze and roll and read.
