How to Use This Pack

Each page is a winter picture with small shapes hidden on it and a bar graph underneath, one row for each kind of shape. Children find a shape, color one box in its row, and keep going until every shape is found; then they write how many in the box at the end of the row. The pages get harder as they go: page 1 has two kinds of shape on a snowman, pages 2 and 3 have three kinds on a polar bear and a snow globe, and pages 4 to 6 have four kinds on an igloo with an arctic fox, a mug of hot cocoa with a pile of snowballs, and a snowshoe hare with a baby seal, with counts up to 10.

In the Classroom

Model the first page together: point to a star, color a box in the star row, and cross the star out so it is not counted twice. Then let children work in pairs, one finding and one coloring. When the graph is done, ask which shape there is the most of, which the fewest, and how many more stars than hearts. The black-and-white copy has white shapes to color as well.

At Home

Have your child cross out or color each shape as they count it, so none is counted twice. When the graph is done, ask which row is longest, and check by counting the shapes in the picture again.

Tips for Success

  • Cross out each shape as you count it
  • Color one box for each shape you find
  • Start at the left of each row
  • The longest bar is the shape you found the most of

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
  • K.G.A.1 Use shape names for everyday objects, and tell where things are with position words like over, under, next to and behind.
  • K.G.A.2 Name shapes correctly even when they are turned, tilted, bigger or smaller.
  • K.G.A.3 Tell whether a shape is flat (two-dimensional) or solid (three-dimensional).
  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.
