Five pages of one-step story problems with two-digit numbers. Pages 1 and 2 add to and take from: students show their thinking on an open number line, and the key jumps the tens and then the ones (36 + 27: 36, 56, 63). Page 3 puts two parts together or takes a whole apart, with a number bond beside each story. Page 4 gives three number sentences for each story, and only one matches. Page 5 mixes the kinds, so students decide for themselves whether to add or subtract and write the number sentence. Every page starts with a worked example.
Read the example on page 1 aloud and draw its open number line on the board: start at 36, jump 20, then 7. Ask whether a different way works too (36 + 4 = 40, then 23 more). On page 5, have students say what is happening in the story (more come, some go away, two groups, comparing) before they pick a sign.
Make up a story about something at home: "We had 42 crackers and ate 15. How many are left?" Ask your child to say whether to add or subtract and why, then solve it together on a line drawn on scrap paper.
