How to Use This Pack

Twelve exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on adding and subtracting within 100, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two or three questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. On tickets 9.7, 9.8 and 9.10 students draw tens and ones, hop on a number line or show their work; the key shows one way, and any way that works is right. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Read the questions aloud, and ask your child to tell you how they found 10 more or added the ones.

Tips for Success

  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Keep a hundreds chart and base-ten blocks on the tables
  • Adding or taking away tens changes only the tens digit
  • To add 67 + 5, make the next ten first: 67 + 3 = 70, then 70 + 2
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.NBT.A.1 Count up to 120 from any starting number, and read, write and use numerals up to 120 to show how many objects.
  • 1.NBT.C.4 Find sums up to 100 (two-digit plus one-digit, or plus a multiple of 10) with models and place value, making a new ten when needed.
  • 1.NBT.C.5 Without counting, find the number 10 greater or 10 smaller than any two-digit number, doing it mentally and explaining why.
  • 1.NBT.C.6 Subtract one multiple of 10 from another (between 10 and 90, answer zero or more), such as 70 - 40, using models or place value.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.

1st Grade Add and Subtract Within 100 Exit Tickets

1st Grade

Exit tickets for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on adding and subtracting within 100: one page a lesson, with the same ticket four times to copy and cut apart. Each ticket has two or three quick questions and ends with an "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves. Students find 10 more and 10 less on the hundreds chart and in their heads, add and subtract tens, add tens to any number, add a one-digit number with and without making a new ten, add with base-ten drawings and on a number line, take away tens by breaking a number apart, solve story problems, fill in hundreds chart pieces and show how they added. Subtraction only ever takes away tens, as in 1st grade. Answer keys for every ticket.
