How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on data and graphs, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: sorting and counting pictures, tally marks, comparing two rows, a picture graph, how many more and how many in all. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who loses count while sorting needs to cross off each picture as it is counted, and one who cannot yet read tally marks needs to make bundles of five with sticks. The graph questions are the unit's easiest, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on data and graphs starts: sort a handful of toys or snacks into groups, count each group, and ask which has more.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Have students cross off each picture as they count it
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.C.6 Decide whether one group of up to 10 objects has more, fewer or the same as another, by matching or counting.
  • K.MD.B.3 Sort objects into named groups, count each group (up to 10), and order the groups by how many they hold.
  • 1.MD.C.4 Sort and show data in up to three groups, then answer questions about the total, each group's count, and how groups differ.

1st Grade Data and Graphs Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on data and graphs, on what the unit builds on. Students sort and count pictures, count and draw tally marks, compare two rows, read a picture graph and find how many more and how many in all.
