How to Use This Pack

Ten exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on counting, comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two or three questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Tickets 3.4, 3.8, 3.9 and 3.10 are for the states that teach those lessons in 2nd grade; skip the ones your class does not learn. The unit test is a separate pack, and no ticket asks one of its problems.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Count on together from a number like 397 past the next hundred, and ask which of two house numbers is greater and how your child knows.

Tips for Success

  • Have students say the hundred they cross out loud: 398, 399, 400
  • Ask "what does each mark count by?" before reading a number line
  • When comparing, look at the hundreds first, then the tens
  • Find the least number first when putting numbers in order
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.A.4 Compare three-digit numbers by looking at the value of each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to decide which ten or hundred a whole number is closest to, and round to it.
