One page to give on the first day of the data unit, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 1st grade data the unit builds on, all with three kinds: sorting and counting pictures, tally marks, reading a picture graph and a bar graph, how many more, and how many in all from a tally chart. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the sorting or the tallies needs to sort real things and tally them before reading graphs, and one who misses how many more needs to line the two rows up and match them. Read the questions aloud for students who are still learning to read. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the data unit starts: sort toys or snacks into kinds, count each kind, and make tally marks for them together.

A check to give before the data unit, on the sorting, tallies and graphs with three kinds that it builds on. Students sort and count pictures, read and draw tally marks, read a picture graph and a bar graph, and find how many more and how many in all.
