How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on place value to 1,000, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 2.10 (one number shown many ways) is for the states that teach it in 2nd grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Paper squares, strips and dots cut from grid paper work as base-ten blocks.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep flats, rods and cubes on the tables for the whole unit
  • Ask "how many hundreds, how many tens, how many ones?" for every number
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.NBT.B.2a See a group of ten ones as one unit called a ten.

  • 2.NBT.A.1a See ten tens grouped together as one unit called a hundred.
  • 2.NBT.A.1b Know that 100, 200 and so on up to 900 mean 1 to 9 hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers up to 1,000 as digits, in words, and in expanded form (like 300 + 40 + 7).
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract to 1,000 with models and place-value strategies, working hundreds, tens and ones separately and regrouping tens or hundreds as needed.
