One page to give on the first day of the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: adding and subtracting with base-ten blocks, two-digit columns, hundreds and tens facts, and rounding and estimating from the place value unit. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the blocks needs base-ten blocks in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the two-digit columns needs that regrouping again before three-digit numbers. The rounding questions show who is ready to estimate and check an answer. Nothing on the page asks for three-digit columns yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: add and subtract two-digit numbers together, and ask which hundred a number like 387 is closest to.

A check to give before the unit on adding and subtracting within 1,000, on what it builds on. Students add and subtract with base-ten blocks, add and subtract two-digit numbers in columns, use facts with hundreds and tens, and round to the nearest hundred to estimate a sum.
