Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Add by partial sums, and add in columns regrouping ones, tens or both
  • Subtract by breaking apart the number taken away, and by counting up on an open number line
  • Subtract in columns, across zeros too
  • Mental math with a hundred: make a hundred, take away a hundred and add back, add the pair that makes a hundred first
  • Solve a one-step and a two-step story problem with a number sentence for each step
  • The last two questions (adding and subtracting four-digit numbers, and = or ≠ between two sums or differences) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on adding and subtracting within 1,000. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 11 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 10 and 11 (four-digit numbers, and = or ≠) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 2, 5 and 6 are three column problems each, and question 7 is three lines: give the point when all three are right, or score them by the problem if you like. Questions 10 and 11 are taught in 3rd grade in some states: leave them out if your class does not learn them and score out of 9. The keys show one way for the count-up and one number sentence for each story; any jumps that add up to the answer, and any sentence that fits the story, are right (268 + 345 = 613 as well as 613 − 268 = 345). The answer keys name each question's skill, write every carried 1 and traded digit, and draw the jumps of the count-up, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to estimate first, then check that the answer is close to the estimate.

Tips for Success

  • Go over the unit review the day before the test
  • Ask "do the ones make a new ten?" before every column problem
  • Have students check a subtraction by adding the answer back
  • On the zeros, trade a hundred for ten tens first, then a ten for ten ones
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
  • 3.NBT.A.2 Add and subtract to 1,000 fluently using place-value strategies and written methods, properties of addition, and fact-family relationships.

3rd Grade Add and Subtract Within 1,000 Test

The unit test for adding and subtracting within 1,000, in two forms. Students add by partial sums and in columns, subtract by breaking apart, counting up and trading across zeros, use a hundred to do mental math, and solve one- and two-step story problems.
