One page to give on the first day of the unit on fractions, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 2nd grade halves, thirds and fourths and the number lines the unit builds on: shapes cut into equal shares, naming a shaded share, cutting a bar into fourths, how many thirds make a whole, and whole numbers on number lines. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet tell equal shares from unequal ones needs paper to fold and cut for the first lessons, and one who misses the number lines needs to count the spaces between marks before fractions go on a line. Nothing on the page writes a fraction in numbers yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on fractions starts: fold paper or cut a sandwich into halves, thirds and fourths, and ask whether the parts are equal.

A check to give before the unit on fractions, on the halves, thirds and fourths and the number lines it builds on. Students pick shapes cut into equal shares, name and cut halves, thirds and fourths, and find whole numbers on number lines.
