How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on what multiplying means, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 2nd grade skills the unit builds on: equal groups and an array found by adding, adding the same number again, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, doubles, and a story solved by adding. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet add equal groups or the rows of an array needs counters in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the skip counting needs counting by 2s, 5s and 10s beside the unit. Nothing on the page asks for multiplying yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on multiplying starts: make equal groups of coins or cereal and add them, and count by 2s, 5s and 10s together.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep counters out for a student who missed the groups and arrays
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

3rd Grade Multiplication Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on what multiplying means, on the adding it builds on. Students add equal groups and the rows of an array, add the same number again, skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s, add doubles and solve a story by adding.
