How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on decimals, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade fractions, coins and place value the unit builds on: a fraction for a shaded bar, fractions on a number line, equal fractions with strips, comparing fractions, counting dimes and pennies, and counting the tens in a number. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet name a shaded fraction or a point on a number line needs fraction strips for the first lessons, and one who misses the coins needs dimes and pennies to count before money becomes tenths and hundredths of a dollar. Nothing on the page asks for a decimal yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on decimals starts: count a handful of dimes and pennies together, and ask how many dimes make a dollar.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep fraction strips and coins out for a student who missed those questions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.NF.A.3d Compare fractions of the same whole that have equal numerators or equal denominators, thinking about part size; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write whole numbers to a million in digits, words and expanded form, and compare them by place value using >, = or <.
  • 4.NF.A.1 Explain with fraction models why multiplying a fraction's numerator and denominator by the same number gives an equal fraction; use this to find equivalent fractions.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.

4th Grade Decimals Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on decimals, on the fractions, coins and place value it builds on. Students name shaded fractions and fractions on a number line, find equal fractions, compare fractions, count dimes and pennies, and count the tens in larger numbers.
