One page to give on the first day of the unit on lines, angles and shapes, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd grade skills the unit builds on: right angles and parallel sides of shapes, fractions of a circle (a turn is part of a circle), adding and subtracting (unknown angles are found that way), rectangles and squares, and flat and solid shapes. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed. A student who misses the fractions of a circle needs halves, fourths and eighths of a circle again before angles as turns; one who misses the right angles needs to check corners with the corner of a sheet of paper before sorting angles and triangles; one who misses the subtraction needs it before unknown angles. Nothing on the page asks for degrees or a protractor yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: look for square corners around the house, cut a paper circle into fourths and eighths, and sort boxes, cans and balls from flat shapes drawn on paper.

A check to give before the unit on lines, angles and shapes, on the shape and number skills it builds on. Students count right angles and parallel sides, name the fraction of a circle that is shaded, add and subtract, pick out rectangles and squares, and tell solid figures from flat shapes.
