One page to give on the first day of the unit on multiplying whole numbers, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade skills the unit builds on: multiplying by tens, hundreds and thousands, rounding to the greatest place (to estimate), an area model and the standard algorithm with a 1-digit number, adding large numbers (to add partial products), and a 2-digit by 2-digit story. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the tens question needs the pattern of zeros before the first lesson, and one who misses the area model or the standard algorithm needs a day of 4th grade review before the 2-digit factors begin. Nothing on the page multiplies by a 2-digit number in a column yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: practice the multiplication facts and multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000 a few minutes a day.

A check to give before the unit on multiplying whole numbers, on the 4th grade skills it builds on. Students multiply by tens, hundreds and thousands, round, fill in an area model, add large numbers, multiply with the standard algorithm and solve a story.
