How to Use This Pack

Five pages of number paths and charts within 1,000. Each path is a row of boxes with a label (On by 5s, Back by 10s) and a few numbers printed; students write the rest. Page 1 counts on and back by 1s across a hundred (196 to 203, 993 to 1,000). Page 2 skip counts by 5s and 10s from numbers that are not on a ten or a hundred (347, 357, 367 ...). Page 3 counts by 100s and back by 10s and 100s. Page 4 skip counts by 2s and by 25s (25, 50, 75, 100, 125 ...), the count behind quarters. Page 5 is a number chart from 601 to 700 with four numbers missing in each row, then chart pieces: the numbers around a center number are 1 more and 1 less beside it, 10 more and 10 less above and below. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Count the first path of each page aloud as a class, and stop at the hundred: what comes after 199? After 299? Before 400? On page 3, notice that counting back by 10s only changes the tens digit until a hundred is crossed.

At Home

Count by 25s with quarters, by 10s with dimes and by 5s with nickels, starting from an amount already in your hand. Count on from house numbers or page numbers in a long book.

Tips for Success

  • After 199 comes 200: the tens and ones start again from 0
  • Skip counting by 10s changes the tens digit; by 100s, the hundreds digit
  • Counting back by 10 from 406 crosses a hundred: 396
  • By 25s: 25, 50, 75, 100, then the same again
  • On a number chart, down is 10 more and right is 1 more

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.A.4 Compare three-digit numbers by looking at the value of each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.

Counting and Skip Counting to 1,000

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack for counting within 1,000. Count on and back by 1s across a hundred (198, 199, 200, 201), skip count by 5s and 10s from any number, count by 100s and back by 10s and 100s, and skip count by 2s and 25s. Most number paths cross a hundred, the place where counting gets tricky. The last page is a number chart from 601 to 700 with numbers missing, plus chart pieces for 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
