One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on number pairs and making 10, to see what children already know. Read each of its six questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. How many more dots make 5?" Children find how many more dots fill a five frame, write the whole in a number bond, circle the domino that makes 6, find how many more dots fill a ten frame, circle the two cards that make 10, and draw the rest of a group next to a bowl to solve a story. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who counts every empty cell one by one is ready to learn the pairs, and one who cannot yet fill a frame needs counters and frames in hand for the first lessons. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on number pairs starts. Read each question aloud and let your child count on fingers or with small things like buttons or cereal.
