Each page has four patterns laid out as a track: a tag for each position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...) above a box for its value. The rule and the first numbers are given. Students fill in the rest and find the number at a later position; in the last pattern on each page they are given a number and find its position. The think box asks for a number further along a pattern that starts at a number and adds that same number each time, and how to find it without writing every number.
Point out the difference between position and value with the first track: the 3rd position holds the number 21. Discuss the think box together, and connect it to multiplication.
Have your child read each track aloud: "the 1st number is 7, the 2nd number is 14". Then ask what the 10th number would be.

Four third grade worksheets on the position and value of numbers in a pattern. Students use a rule to fill in a pattern, find the number at a later position, and find the position of a given number. A think box on each page asks for a shortcut. Includes color and black-and-white versions and answer keys.
