Six pages for Years 4 and 5 on moving shapes on a square grid. Page 1 asks children to describe the move from point A to point B, counting squares left or right first, then up or down. Page 2 gives a move and children translate each shape, or a point, and draw where it ends up. Page 3 works the other way: shape A has been translated to shape B and children describe the move. Page 4 reflects shapes in a mirror line drawn on the grid, some touching the line and some apart from it. Page 5 is for Year 5: children translate or reflect a shape on a coordinate grid in the first quadrant and write the new coordinates of each vertex. Page 6 shows pairs of shapes and asks whether B is a translation of A, a reflection, or neither.
Put a shape on a squared board or a floor grid and move it together: "3 squares right and 2 squares down". Ask which corner children counted from and whether it matters. Then hold a mirror on a line of the grid and compare the shape with its reflection: what stays the same, and what has changed?
Draw a simple shape on squared paper and take turns giving moves to each other, such as "4 left, 1 up", then drawing where the shape ends up. Fold the paper along a grid line and draw the shape's reflection on the other side.

Moving points and shapes on a square grid by translation and reflection. Students describe moves as so many squares left or right and up or down, draw translated and reflected shapes, give the new coordinates of each vertex and decide whether a shape has been translated or reflected.
