Five pages of story problems with three-digit numbers. Pages 1 and 2 add and subtract: each story has a bar model with its numbers printed and a ? for the number to find, so students see whether they know the parts or the whole. Page 3 compares two amounts with two bars, one above the other. Page 4 has two-step stories, with a number sentence for Step 1 and for Step 2. On page 5 the number sentence comes first, and students write a story to match it, then solve. Every page starts with a worked example.
Read the example on page 1 aloud and point to each part of the bar model: the two parts the story tells, and the ? for the whole. Ask whether to add or subtract before anyone works the numbers. Before page 5, write 400 − 150 on the board and let the class tell three different stories that match it.
Use big numbers from around the house: pages in a book, steps on a walk, points in a game. "This book has 320 pages and you have read 145. How many pages are left?" Ask your child to draw a bar for the story, then solve it together.
