About the Area and Perimeter Worksheet Generator

The Area and Perimeter worksheet generator creates free, printable geometry worksheets you can customize, preview, and download in seconds. Adjust the number range, layout, and difficulty to fit your child or class; every worksheet is generated fresh and includes a complete answer key on the second page. There are no sign-ups, no watermarks, and no limits on how many you can print.

Recommended for 3rd - 5th, this generator is part of our Geometry collection. Geometry worksheets build spatial reasoning, vocabulary for shapes, and a foundation for fractions, area, and perimeter in later grades. Count the squares, find the area and perimeter of rectangles, find missing sides, split composite shapes, and draw rectangles.

How to use these worksheets

For teachers

  • Have students point out shapes in the classroom before working on the worksheet; "find a rectangle near the window".
  • Pair shape practice with sorting activities; sort by number of sides, by angles, or by symmetry.
  • Introduce vocabulary explicitly: vertex, side, edge, face, symmetry, congruent.
  • Fold paper cutouts to check a line of symmetry before drawing it on the worksheet.

For parents and at home

  • Find shapes around the house; windows are rectangles, plates are circles, signs may be octagons.
  • Talk about symmetry in nature; leaves, butterflies, snowflakes; to make the concept memorable.
  • Build shapes with straws, toothpicks, or blocks and count the sides and corners together.

Skills your students will practice

  • Identifying and naming 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, etc.)
  • Counting sides, vertices, and angles
  • Recognizing lines of symmetry
  • Completing the other half of a symmetrical shape
  • Describing shapes using attributes

Aligned to Common Core State Standards

The worksheets generated here support the following Common Core math standards:

  • 3.MD.C.5a: Know that a square with 1-unit sides has an area of one square unit and can be used to measure area.
  • 3.MD.C.5b: Know that a flat shape exactly covered by some number of unit squares, with no spaces or overlapping, has that many square units of area.
  • 3.MD.C.6: Find an area by counting how many unit squares cover it, in square centimeters, meters, inches, feet or made-up units.
  • 3.MD.C.7a: Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b: Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c: Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
  • 3.MD.C.7d: Find the area of shapes made of rectangles by splitting them into separate rectangles and adding their areas, including in real problems.
  • 3.MD.D.8: Solve perimeter problems for polygons: add side lengths, find a missing side, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters but different areas, or the reverse.
  • 4.MD.A.3: Solve real and math problems with rectangle area and perimeter formulas, such as finding an unknown side from the area and the other side.
  • 5.NF.B.4b: Tile a rectangle with fraction side lengths using squares whose sides are unit fractions, and see the area equals the two sides multiplied.

Frequently asked questions

What grade levels are these Area and Perimeter worksheets best for?

These worksheets are designed primarily for 3rd - 5th students, though they work well for any child who needs practice in this area regardless of grade label. The generator lets you adjust the difficulty up or down, so you can use the same tool for a struggling student who needs more support and an advanced student who wants a challenge.

Are these worksheets really free?

Yes, completely. Every worksheet generated on Animal Math is free to download, print, copy, and distribute. There are no watermarks, no sign-up required, and no limits on how many you can create. Teachers, parents, tutors, and homeschoolers can use them in any educational setting.

Do these worksheets come with answer keys?

Yes. Every generated PDF includes a complete answer key on a separate page so students can self-check, parents can verify quickly, and teachers can grade efficiently. The answer key uses the same problem layout as the worksheet for easy side-by-side comparison.

Can I customize the difficulty or layout?

Yes. The generator includes controls to adjust number ranges, problem counts, layout style, and other parameters specific to this worksheet type. Make a small set for daily practice or a long set for assessments; every PDF is generated fresh based on your settings.

Are these worksheets aligned to Common Core?

Yes. Every worksheet on Animal Math is built to support Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The standards covered by this generator are listed in the Common Core section above. They also align with most state-specific standards based on Common Core.
