How to Use This Pack

Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on dividing multi-digit numbers, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, such as a division in the bracket, a quotient to check by multiplying or a story with a remainder, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The keys show partial quotients by place value; other partial quotients that add to the same quotient are right too, and an estimate may use other numbers that divide easily. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing division together. Ask your child to check each quotient by multiplying it by the divisor and adding the remainder.

Tips for Success

  • Think of 6,400 ÷ 8 as 64 hundreds ÷ 8
  • Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
  • Write a 0 in the quotient when the divisor does not go into a place
  • In a story, ask whether the remainder needs one more group or is left out
  • Check: the quotient times the divisor, plus the remainder, is the dividend

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (24 = 3 × 8: 24 is 3 times as many as 8) and write comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.A.2 Multiply or divide to solve story problems that compare amounts (times as many), using drawings and equations, and tell them apart from comparing by adding.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, finding quotients and remainders with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.

4th Grade Division Exit Tickets

Exit tickets for every lesson of a unit on dividing multi-digit numbers by a 1-digit number, from dividing tens and hundreds to long division with zeros in the quotient. Each page holds one ticket four times to cut apart, with remainders, area models, partial quotients, long division, estimates and stories.
