Five pages that move from one step to two. Page 1 has stories with three numbers to add; students circle the two whose ones make a ten (26 and 14) and add those first. Page 2 adds three numbers on an open number line. Page 3 is the first two-step page: each story is two things happening in turn (Leo gives 18 stickers away, then gets 26 more), and students show each step on its own open number line. Page 4 writes a number sentence for each step, Step 1 and Step 2, and includes compare stories that ask for the total (Ben has 15 more than Ana; how many do they have in all?). Page 5 mixes them. Every page starts with a worked example.
Read the example on page 3 aloud and stop after each sentence: "What happened? How many does Leo have now?" Write the number after each step on the board, so students hear that step 1's answer is where step 2 starts. On page 4, ask what the first question hiding in the story is (how many does Ben have?) before they look for the total.
Tell a two-step story at snack time: "You had 30 crackers. You ate 12. Then I gave you 10 more. How many now?" Ask your child what happened first and what happened next, and write down the number after each step.
