How to Use This Pack

Eight lesson plans, one for each lesson of the fourth unit of 5th grade, dividing whole numbers, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eight lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Estimating comes first and returns in every lesson: rounding the divisor tells students how many digits to expect and which digit to try. Lesson 4.7, writing a remainder as a fraction or a decimal, is taught in 5th grade in Florida and Oklahoma; skip it if your class does not learn it. The exit tickets, pre-check, review and unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans teach with other numbers than they use.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Play money shows remainders well: share the dollars, then trade what is left for cents. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Ask "about how many groups of the divisor fit?" at every step
  • Estimate before every division, so a missing 0 in the quotient shows up at once
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multi-step story problems with whole numbers and all four operations, deciding what remainders mean, writing equations with a letter, and checking by estimating.
  • 4.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by one-digit numbers, finding quotients and remainders with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by two-digit numbers to find whole-number quotients, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction as division, such as 2/5 = 2 ÷ 5, and solve sharing story problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
