How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a unit on money and patterns, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. The whole unit is for the states that teach money and patterns in 1st grade: lessons 12.1 to 12.5 are coins, 12.6 and 12.7 are money in everyday life (earning, needs and wants, spend, save and share) and 12.8 to 12.10 are patterns. Teach the lessons your state lists, as one unit or spread through the year; the coin lessons pair well with skip counting by 5s and 10s.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use real coins from a pocket or a jar: sort them, name them and count them, the coins worth the most first. The "Try it together" step makes a short lesson, and the "Words to use" are the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Use real or play coins in every coin lesson before the pictures on the sheets
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.MD.C.8 Solve story problems with pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollar bills, writing amounts with the $ and ¢ signs.

1st Grade Money and Patterns Lesson Plans

Lesson plans for every lesson of a 1st grade unit on money and patterns, one page a lesson, with a unit overview that lays the unit out day by day. Each plan has the goal and its "I can" line, what to get ready, the words to use, a 45 minute lesson in five steps (warm up, teach with words to say, try it together, practice, exit ticket), questions to ask, the mistakes students make and what to do about them, and ideas for students who need help or are ready for more. Each one ends with the Animal Math worksheets, worksheet makers, tools and quiz for that lesson. Lessons: name the coins, coin values and the cent sign, count pennies, nickels or dimes, count nickels and pennies, count dimes, nickels and pennies, earning money with needs and wants, and spend, save and share, then repeating, growing and number patterns. The whole unit is for the states that teach money and patterns in 1st grade.
