How to Use This Pack

Eleven lesson plans, one for each lesson of the 3rd grade unit on the multiplication and division facts, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the eleven lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 3.11 (facts with 11 and 12) is for the states that teach it in 3rd grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Ask which fact your child already knows that is close to a hard one: the 2s for the 4s, the 5s for the 6s, the 10s for the 9s.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Ask "which fact do you know that is close?" every day of the unit
  • Keep square tiles out all unit: every strategy is an array split two ways
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Let each student keep a card of facts I know and facts to practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
