4th Grade Math CurriculumUnit 14

These are the lesson plans for Unit 14 of 15 in the 4th Grade Math Curriculum: 127 lessons in teaching order, week by week, each with a lesson plan and an exit ticket.

Also for this unit: exit tickets, pre-check, unit review and test. See the whole year

Resources for Each Lesson

Everything each lesson plan points to, with links. Sheet numbers count worksheets: a color pack prints each sheet again in black and white.

  • Measure and draw angles with a protractor
  • Find an unknown angle with an equation
  • Sort triangles by their angles and sides
  • Sort shapes by parallel sides and right angles
  • Always, sometimes or never in the quadrilateral family
  • Find and draw lines of symmetry
  • Count the faces, edges and vertices of solids

How to Use This Pack

Twelve lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 4th grade unit on lines, angles and shapes, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the twelve lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, maker, tools and quizzes for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. Every student needs a protractor and a ruler, and an index card makes a handy right angle checker all unit. Lessons 14.10 (the quadrilateral family) and 14.12 (solid figures) are taught in 4th grade in some states; skip them if yours teaches them in another grade. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons, and the plans use other angles and shapes than they do.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Look for angles, parallel lines and symmetry around the house, fold paper shapes, and build solids with straws and clay or count the faces of boxes. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Have students say acute or obtuse before they read a protractor
  • Mark right angles with a small square and parallel sides with arrows every time
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.G.A.1 See that shapes like rhombuses, rectangles and squares share features, such as four sides, that make them all quadrilaterals; draw quadrilaterals outside those groups.
  • 4.MD.C.5a Know an angle's size is the share of a circle (centered at its vertex) between its rays; one degree is 1/360 of a full turn.
  • 4.MD.C.5b Know that an angle made of some number of one-degree turns measures that many degrees, so 50 one-degree turns make 50°.
  • 4.MD.C.6 Use a protractor to find the size of an angle to the nearest whole degree, and draw angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.C.7 Know that angle measures add up when an angle is split into parts, and find unknown angles in diagrams by adding or subtracting, using equations.
  • 4.G.A.1 Draw and find points, lines, line segments, rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines, including in flat shapes.
  • 4.G.A.2 Sort flat shapes by whether they have parallel or perpendicular lines or angles of a certain size, and recognize right triangles as a group.
  • 4.G.A.3 Find a line of symmetry, a fold line that makes two matching parts; pick out shapes that have one and draw their lines of symmetry.
